ART SHOW :)

I loved the art show! :) I was there for hours everyday that it was up. I had a lot of fun doing security for comm and design. I can't get the unit because I was hoping to pick up my last couple of hours from takedown, but the people who went before me were really efficient so there wasn't anything left for me to do. It's okay though, my time in the art show was well spent. I enjoyed chilling in the grade ten video room. I liked seeing my battery movie up and watching everyone else's movies. Although it got really hot and sticky and kind of smelly in there, I loved the grade ten video room (especially operating the spinning door, haha). Some art pieces that I loved were the freak show, graffiti cathedral and the fashion pieces. I spent the most time in design and comm/media because that's where I was trying to get my hours and watching the performances. My favorite part had to be the performances of my friends Angel Lopez & Erika Bautista. I watched them and bugged everyone in the art show trying to get everyone to subscribe to their youtubes. I even made a little makeshift sign out of an old piece of paper when I got tired of spelling out the link to passersby. Yeah, their performances were definitely my favorite part of the art show. Subscriiiiiiiiibe, haha! This year's art show was such a success & I'm really proud to have been a part of it. Next year I'm taking photo so watch out! :) I'm soooooo excited x)

Everything's Amazing & Nobody's Happy

This video definitely makes me feel a little more grateful for the technology I have now. I can't imagine living in the olden days; the technology in my world has consumed a lot of my world. I guess I can see where Louis C.K. is coming from. I have one of the laggiest phones in the world and I sometimes take it for granted. Something I definitely took for granted was my laptop. It's now in a really broken state and can't support itself unless I prop my entire Harry Potter collection behind it. I became really used to having a laptop at my fingertips at school and I find myself complaining that I have to use gigantic desktops in its place. I should be really thankful of the resources I have at hand. A lot of people don't a have a phone at all, so I should be really thankful for mine and the same goes out to the school's computers. I'm very thankful to the school for letting me use them as learning resources. Like Louis C.K. said, just because I've become accustomed to the newest things in technology doesn't mean I deserve them. The world doesn't owe me anything if my cell phone freezes, or if the school's desktops are taking a litle slower than usual. At least I have all of this amazing technology available to me, whereas they hadn't even heard of laptops in like 1960! My dad is contsatnly telling me stories of when he was a little kid, he didn't half a tenth of the things he spoils me with now. Cellphones? He didn't even have a phone in his bedroom that he shared with his three brothers. Laptops? They didn't even have a desktop. "Another iPod? I didn't need those when I was a kid... that's what spoons were for!' I'm amazed at how much of my life depends on technology now compared to my dad's old days. I have an iPod for running, laptop for schoolwork, cellphone to fulfill my textaholic needs and a bajillion dollar graphing calculator for my impossible math homework. Tonight I was actually doing a math unit and needed help from my dad, and he was like teaching me how to do everything algebraically like on paper and I was able to do th same thing in like five seconds witha graphing calculator. I'd be so dead without it; I would have no idea of how to figure out if my original parabola is equal to the new one I put into some other form. I need this big fat calculator to do my work whereas my dad was just jotting it all down on paper. I feel like one day humans are gonna be too dependant on computers on doing work like that for them and we're gonna forget how to do our own manual work! D; Anyways, I think the most important thing I've taken from this blog entry is to be thankful for what our technological world has. Our technology has come really far and it's just going to keep getting better and better. Our youth should listen more to the stories of the past in order to be more thankful for the things that we have now.

gorgeous, eh? ;) haha, it's the first laptop ever! look how far we've come. :)

Cell Phone Manners Matter

Hello! My name is Gelica Salvador
... and I am a textaholic.

I feel like such a hypocrite doing a blog about cell phone manners, when I'm honestly the worst person with my cell phone. I got my first cell phone at what I now realize was a really young age - 12. Seriously, what could a twelve year old need with a cell phone? I guess I've just been really spoiled by my parents, haha. I'm actually like, the worst "textaholic" of life. Talking on the phone has never really been my style - I find it really awkward talking on the phone with a friend knowing that my parents can hear every word I'm saying thanks to my paper-thin walls. I prefer texting because its short, sweet, and oh so portable! I text everywhere, anywhere and almost anytime. I'm texting in school, on the bus, during meals ( I told you I was the worst D; ), at freaking 4 in the morning... every second of my unfortunate teenage life basically. It's really bad because I can be in like, two totally different conversations at a time. I'd be having a really serious conversation with my dad about units and at the same time I'd be talking to Selin about our plans for her birthday via text message. The worst part is he barely even minds because every one is just so used to my behaviour being like this. It's really bad, I know, but I get like unlimited texts a month and my super Filipino parents have raised me to take the most I can out of available resources, especially things labeled as "unlimited", "free", and our favorite - "buffet". I've come to realize that I can make the most of my cell phone privileges but still be respectful of those around me.

Although I can act disrespectful with my phone, that doesn't mean I don't notice when others act disrespectfully with their own phones. A prime example that I experience on an almost daily basis is people talking extremely loud on their cell phones o the bus. I get that I'm on public transit and I shouldn't be expecting people to use their indoor voices on the bus, but still! I don't really want to hear every detail of what went down during last night's party at full volume, thank you very much. There shouldn't be a problem with people talking on the phone in public; all they have to do is be respectful of those around them.

Anyways, this brings me to list five rules on cell phone etiquette that I will hopefully start to follow:
1. Don't use your cell phone when you're having an important conversation. Give the person your full attention.
2. Be respectful when you're in a public area. Don't talk at excessively loud volumes that can disturb the people around you.
3. If you're supposed to be spending time with a friend at their house or wherever, then don't busy yourself with another conversation on the phone. If you went over to their house to spend quality time with them then don't just ignore them and talk on the phone.
4. Dont talk on the phone while driving and definitely don't text either! Drivers should give their full attention to the task at hand - driving!
5. If you're at the movies, don't distract others by taking out your bright bright bright cell phone. Even worse, don't start a conversation! You also paid for the movie... why aren't you watching it?

Our society is so used to the bad behaviour we're practicing because of cell phones that they don't even care about the troubles it's causing some of us.

Colossal U Ad Campaign!

At first I really disliked the way Colossal U was advertising itself, but when I learned that it was all a set up for Algoma U's advertising campaign I found it pretty interesting and kind of funny. x) These Colossal University advertisements were designed to grab the interest of the people who pass by... and hopefully they would end up exploring "Colossal U's" website. The ads diminished the value of individuality with sayings like "Every Colossal U student will turn out exactly the same. We guarantee it." and "New ideas and new thinking? Not at Colossal U." I really doubted that these ads were true because everyone is different from each other. Everyone learns differently from each other. If they are treated the way Colossal U promises to treat them then there is no way in life that any of the students that attend Colossal U will get a promising education. Like, maybe one out of a bajillion students will. Actually not even that; I bet if Colossal U was a real school they'd end up with like.. what? Ten kids in enrollment? Anyways, like I said, each student is different and has different learning needs. I know this because at Ward there are a million different ways to learn one thing in our self directed school. Going to my school I've come to realise that variety and individuality is a key part of my education.
Algoma U tried to get passers by to be intrigued by Colossal U's ridiculous statements. Hopefully those with "new ideas" and "new thinking" would be infuriated by these advertisements and want to explore Colossal U's site. When we get to the site a woman comes and pushes the graphics and stuff aside to make room for Algoma University which, according to her & several other professors and students, is the exact opposite of what Colossal U is. In my opinion, they used this campaign to show potential students that unlike other schools, Algoma U's community will care about you as an indiviual and not just a number. Their students won't be cookie cutter versions of each other, but they are going to further develop their individualality if they enroll at Algoma University. All in all I found this campaign clever and pretty funny.
